BREAKING NEWS: The European People's Party (EPP) made a decision against transnational voting lists. Currently decision in the European Parliament has been postponed - more information.
The EU continues to grow - but the citizens are too often left on the sidelines. We welcome a new proposal to extend citizen's rights which will come before the Parliament, but unfortunately powerful interests – within the EPP (The European People’s Party: the political family of the European conservative parties) - want to block it. Together we can prevent that happening.
There is still no EU-wide voting right for the EP elections. Each member state elects its own candidates according to its own, often very different, rules. At a time when the EU is placing great burdens on its citizens, we need more European democracy.
In March, MEPs had planned to vote on a proposal to improve voting rights. This initiative is a cautious first attempt to democratise and Europeanise the elections to the European Parliament. Further improvements must follow.
Almost unbelievably, even this first modest step towards more democracy in Europe is threatened with failure. It is meeting considerable resistance. Many MEPs lack the courage to push through this necessary democratisation and Europeanisation of the voting right. On March 8th, the EPP fraction in the European Parliament decided against a free vote, announcing its intention to vote “no” in a block. Until then roughly one-third of the EPP members had intended to vote “yes”. In order to keep the proposal on the table of this Parliament the responsible MEPs have temporarily withdrawn the proposal.
Now it’s up to you - the citizens of Europe. If we act together we may be able to prevent this initiative from failing. At the moment, this is the only one of the many official EU proposals which aims to expand citizens’ rights in Europe - so PLEASE sign this appeal from Democracy International. In particular, we have to convince the EPP members that we need more democracy in Europe.
